Master’s Program in Myology

Program Type: Thesis
Language: English

About Deparment

Myology is an integrative experimental discipline that brings together biological, engineering, and clinical sciences, playing a key role in the detection, prevention, and treatment of diseases. The Master’s Program in Myology aims to provide students with international-level knowledge and expertise in four main areas: biomechanics, which includes muscle-tendon mechanics, neuromuscular function, smooth muscle biomechanics, and cardiac muscle biomechanics; exercise physiology, covering cellular and molecular adaptation, cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary functions, oxygen circulation, and muscle strength; movement science, which focuses on physical performance, daily activities, and sports-related movement; and the study of activity under health and disease conditions, with a special emphasis on neuromuscular disorders and genetically based diseases affecting mobility, particularly rare diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

At Yeditepe University, research in this field has been ongoing for years through various departments including Physiology, Biophysics, Neurology, Pharmacology, Physical Therapy, Orthopedics, Medical Genetics, Physiotherapy, Mechanical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering within the Faculty of Medicine. Over time, a strong foundation of knowledge, research infrastructure, and scientific expertise has developed, creating a rich environment for interdisciplinary collaboration. The Master’s Program in Myology, established under the Institute of Health Sciences, will serve as a unifying platform, integrating all research efforts in the field and fostering a multidisciplinary approach.

This program plays a crucial role in training young, well-equipped researchers and academics who can follow international scientific literature and contribute to the field. Graduates will have the opportunity to conduct research in a broad range of areas, deepen their expertise after graduation, and collaborate with leading scientists in their respective domains. A master’s degree in Myology also provides an excellent foundation for further research, enabling graduates to work independently in their fields of interest while honing their investigative and analytical skills.

Through this program, students will receive an internationally recognized education in Myology, gaining fundamental knowledge and skills related to striated, cardiac, and smooth muscles, biomechanics, neuromuscular disorders, and genetically based conditions affecting movement. They will develop the ability to conduct scientific research, formulate correct hypotheses, choose and apply appropriate methodologies, access, evaluate, and interpret scientific information, and stay up to date with international developments in the field. The program is designed to train professionals who are open to innovation, capable of both independent research and teamwork, and able to contribute to advancements in their respective areas..
